CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The University of Illinois’ newly renovated Memorial Stadium has been damaged after a water pipe burst.

Spokesman Kent Brown says the pipe on the stadium’s fifth level apparently froze and burst, sending water to the levels below.

A contractor found several inches of water in the Colonnades Club, the stadium’s third-floor lounge and seating area. Brown says the ceiling will have to be repaired, and the carpet might have to be replaced.

He says officials don’t know when the pipe burst or how much the repairs will cost.

The university spent two years and $121 million renovating Memorial Stadium, which reopened this fall.

That renovation included adding the Colonnades Club, where seats run from $1,600 to $2,500 a season.
