January 23, 2009
Demetri McCamey had 25 points and seven assists to lead No. 25 Illinois to a 64-57 victory over Wisconsin. It was the first Illini victory over the Badgers in six games. Mike Davis was the only other Illini to score in double figures with 10 points.
The Illini led 44-30 early in the second half, but the Badgers stormed back to cut the lead to 61-55 with 52 seconds remaining. Despite two Illinois turnovers in the final minute, the Badgers missed four of their final shots and the Illini made 3-of-4 free throws to preserve the victory.
Illinois’ defense had another strong outing, holding the Badgers to 10 points below their season average on 35.6 percent shooting. Joe Krabbenhoft led Wisconsin with 16 points and 12 rebounds, while Marcus Landry and Trevon Hughes each added 13.
Illinois (17-3, 5-2 Big Ten) now trails first-place Michigan State by a half game for the conference lead. The Badgers (12-7, 3-4) have now lost four consecutive Big Ten games for the first time since 1998 when they lost 11 conference games in a row.
Illinois took a 32-25 halftime lead behind McCamey’s 10 first-half points. Wisconsin struggled from the field converting on 9-of-27 shot attempts, while Illinois made 13 of its 24 attempts.
