Women’s gymnastics dominates in Chicago meet

The Illinois women’s gymnastics team dominated the competition at the quad meet Chicago Style Invite Friday at Navy Pier.

Coming back from behind, Illinois won with a score of 195.100, finishing in front of #24 Boise State (194.775), Michigan State (194.400) and Illinois-Chicago (193.275). ??

Freshman Kelsey Joannides won her first all-around title with a career-high score of 39.125, just in front of teammate Nicole Cowart, who took second with a 39.075. Sophomore Melissa Fernandez took fourth with a 38.825. Senior Marijka Botterman tied the school record and won the vault crown with a score of 9.925. Senior Julie Crall, the reigning Big Ten beam champion, won the beam title 9.850. ?

The collegiate meet had over 7,000 fans. It was part of the Illinois Gymnastics Institute (IGI) “Chicago Style” Club Gymnastics Meet, which is one of the largest women’s gymnastics invitationals in the world.
