Illini baseball falls in game two against No. 1 LSU
Mar 6, 2009
The Illinois baseball team dropped game two of a three-game series with LSU on Saturday afternoon, losing 22-10.
Freshman Willie Argo got his first start at right field for the Illini (6-2) this season, batting 3-for-3 with five RBIs, and junior catcher Aaron Johnson had another good performance, batting 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Johnson now has five RBIs on a weekend in which he has hit 3-for-8 and won Friday’s game with a dramatic ninth-inning home run.
The high-octane LSU (10-1) offense bounced back after a poor showing in game one, scoring six runs in the first two innings against Illinois starting pitcher Aaron Martin. Sophomores Leon Landry and Micah Gibbs, as well as senior Nicholas Pontiff, all recorded grand slams for the Tigers in what proved to be a very tough day for the entire Illinois pitching staff. Six total pitchers saw time on the mound for the Illini, and Martin, a senior, is now 1-1 on the season after being charged with the loss.
