Five Illini gymnasts named to second team All-Big Ten

Five Illinois women’s gymnastics members were named to the all-conference team Friday night when the honors were announced at the Big Ten Championships banquet at the University of Illinois. Senior Marijka Botterman, juniors Nicole Cowart and Sarah Schmidt, sophomore Allison Buckley and freshman Kelsey Joannides all earned second team All-Big Ten honors. Illinois had more selections than any other Big Ten school, and the five members marked the most in one season that the Illini program has ever had.

Senior Lindsey Smith was named Illinois’ honoree for the Big Ten sportsmanship award, an award for individuals who stand out for their sportsmanship, ethical behavior, academic standing and good citizenship.?Also at the banquet, the Big Ten Championships rotation order was drawn. Illinois will begin on the uneven bars before moving on to the beam, the floor routine and then the vault, with a bye between each event.
At the end of Saturday’s competition, the Big Ten’s Gymnast of the Year, Freshman of the Year and Coach of the Year will be announced.
