The Big Ten Champion Illinois men’s gymnastics team moved one step closer to its goal of an NCAA title as it qualified for the national team finals.

The Illini finished second behind No. 2 Oklahoma in the second qualifying session to advance to the team finals on Friday. Sophomore Daniel Ribeiro played a starring role in the qualifiers as he tied the highest score in the NCAA this season with a 16.000 on the pommel horse.

While he didn’t break any records, sophomore Paul Ruggeri finished with the high score on the parallel bars, high bar and the all-around competition.

The Illini will now compete against Oklahoma again and will also face No. 1 Stanford, the winner of the first qualifying session.
