The U.S. National Women’s Soccer Team announced Friday that former Illini great Ella Masar will be activated for the team’s Oct. 29 showdown against Germany.
The match will mark the first career cap earned by Masar, currently playing for the Chicago Red Stars.
Masar will help replace midfielders Megan Rapinoe and Angela Hucles. Rapinoe underwent knee surgery Friday after injuring her meniscus, while Hucles announced her retirement from the team after earning 109 career caps for the US and netting 13 career goals in international play.
Masar tallied 27 goals for the Illini from 2004-2007, putting her in fifth place on the school career goals list. She also ranks second on the all-time assists list with 20.
Head coach Pia Sundhage and the No. 1 U.S. squad will leave for Germany on Tuesday, and they will train in Munich and Augsburg leading up to their clash with the second-ranked Germans. The meeting marks the first time the two teams have squared off since their 0-0 draw in the 2007 Four Nations tournament in Guangzhou, China.
