Illinois wrestler Jesse Delgado won the NCAA national championship at the 125-pound weight class Saturday night in Oklahoma City. Delgado beat Cornell’s Nahshon Garrett 3-2 in the final for what is Delgado’s second straight national championship.

Delgado was the 2013 national champion at 125 pounds. He is now Illinois’ first back-to-back wrestling national champion in 56 years.

As the No. 1 seed at 125 pounds, Delgado beat Garrett, the 2-seed, for the second time this season. He previously defeated Garrett on Dec. 1 at Madison Square Garden in New York. The losses to Delgado were Garrett’s only two losses this season.

Delgado is one of eight Illini competing in this weekend’s national championships.
