Illini volleyball sweeps Indiana at Huff Hall
October 25, 2014
The Illinois volleyball team took care of business Friday night.
In front of a Huff Hall crowd adorned in pink for the Breast Cancer Awareness match, No. 10 Illinois (15-5, 7-2 Big Ten) swept Indiana (12-9, 3-6), a team that was 0-4 in its last four matches coming into Friday. Illinois won by scores of 25-18, 25-14 and 25-19 for the its fourth straight win of the season.
Illinois had one of it’s most varied nights in terms of offensive output. Senior outside hitter Jocelynn Birks, who usually doubles the number of attempts of most her teammates, had 17 on the night while senior middle blocker Anna Dorn had 14, equaling the most she’s had all season.
Dorn and senior opposite side hitter Liz McMahon led the Illini offensively on the night as the pair finished with 10 and 11 kills, respectively. Dorn and sophomore Katie Stadick recorded the highest hitting percentages on the night — both hitting over .700 for the match.
“I thought that our passing was excellent,” Dorn said. “(Alexis Viliunas) was just putting it in a great spot and it allowed me to be able to kind of hit over the blockers and hit around them. I think that the more we work on it throughout the season, it’s your hope that as a hitter you become more confident with your setter and I think Lex and I did a really good job this week of just kind of connecting.”

Playing in her fourth match as the team’s lone setter after a rotation system switch from the 6-2 to the 5-1, Viliunas finished the night with a team-high 31 assists as she spread the ball around to whichever Illini seemed to have the hot hand.
The Illini went back and forth with the Hoosiers early in the first set. The teams traded points on the way to a 5-5 tie. Illinois pulled away, scoring five straight points to take a 10-5 lead before the Hoosiers reigned in the Illini. While Indiana brought the lead to two points at 17-15, Illinois eventually took the first set.
The Illini started the second set strong, taking a 4-1 lead out of the gate. Illinois built on its strong start, going on an 11-0 run from the 8-6 mark to build the team’s lead to 17-6. From there the Illini were able to cruise to a second set win.
While Viliunas said the passing, which was solid throughout the first two sets, may have let up a little bit in the third set, Illinois was able to ride McMahon’s six kills in the third set to a win.
“Liz was doing a great job of getting herself in a good spot, and hitting the ball in good spots so I was just going to her,” Viliunas said.
The Illini will be back in action Saturday against No. 13 Purdue at 5 p.m. at Huff Hall. For head coach Kevin Hambly, tomorrow’s match will be a “slugfest.”
“It’s two physical teams,” Hambly said. “It’s a battle. It should be a lot of fun.”
