May 18, 2015
USA Basketball announced the addition of Illinois freshman Chatrice White to the U19 team on Sunday. White was one of 14 players selected out of a pool of 34 who were invited to try out at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. Kristine Anigwe of Desert Vista High School will play alongside White as the team’s only other center.
White was named to the Big Ten All-Freshman team and was an all-Big Ten honorable mention. The 6-foot-3 standout averaged 14.5 points, two blocks and seven rebounds a game during her freshman campaign at Illinois – she shot 44 percent from the field and 36 percent from behind the arc. Her contributions helped the Illini finish last season with an overall record of 15-16 (6-12 Big Ten) after finishing 9-21 (2-14 Big Ten) the previous season.
“We are so proud of Chatrice that she has earned a spot to represent our country,” Illinois Women’s Basketball Head Coach Matt Bollant said in a press release.
The U19 team is coached by Dawn Staley, who also serves as the head coach for South Carolina. Staley previously served as an assistant coach for the U19’s and led the Gamecocks to the NCAA Final Four last season, losing by a score 66-65.
The team starts group play July 11-13 in Alicante, Spain, in a round robin format. Afterward, the FIBA U19 World Championships begin in Chekhov, Russia, where Team USA will be defending its U19 title for the sixth straight time.
