Men’s track and field:

The Illinois men’s track and field team traveled to Iowa City this weekend to compete at the University of Iowa. The Illini finished in fifth place as a team, behind Iowa and Minnesota, but ahead of Purdue and Wisconsin.

The Illini built off last week’s performance at the Illini Open, with senior distance runner Dan Lathrop and senior sprinter Devin Quinn setting meet records in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 8:23.45 and 200-meter dash premier with a time of 21.05 seconds, respectively. Sophomore sprinter Jason Shannon surpassed the meet record for the 200-meter dash but finished fourth with a time of 21.96 seconds.

“We had a really good weekend at Iowa”, Lathrop said. “We’ve been working hard, not only all winter but the fall too, so to see a lot of those performances come through is really great.”

Junior distance runner Jonathan Davis set a meet record in the mile premier with a time of 3:58.06, senior distance runner Konrad Eiring won the 1000-meter run, and Quinn also won the 60-meter dash.

“To be able to see a sub-four (minute) mile in person is just a pretty amazing thing,” Lathrop said. “I was there last year when he did it in the Armory, and that’s definitely one of my favorite memories of being here.”

Head coach Mike Turk was happy with the number of records that were set and thought it was a result of strong competition and prepared Illini.

“It wasn’t unexpected for us to have that many personal best performances,” Turk said. “It was nice to see. I think the student-athletes, they all performed well.”

Women’s track and field:

The Illinois women’s track and field team placed seventh in Iowa City this weekend, behind other Big Ten teams Minnesota, Iowa and Purdue, and ahead of Wisconsin.

Freshman distance runner Emma Milburn won the women’s 800-meter run, setting a meet record of 2:13.11. Junior distance runner Vanessa Flaherty and freshman distance runner Shanice Garbutt also broke the meet record in the event, but finished fourth and fifth, respectively.

Freshman distance runner Madison Marasco won the 800-meter run premier with a time of 2:12.12, and sophomore distance runner Mikaela Lucki finished second. Marasco won the 800 meter-run last weekend in Champaign but had her personal best time in Iowa City.

Senior sprinter and pole vaulter Chisom Nwoko finished second in the 400-meter dash premier, and third in the pole vault. Senior long jumper Briana Driver finished second in the long jump.

Head coach Mike Turk observed that despite being a young team, their work ethic has overcompensated for their inexperience.

“This team is very focused,” Turk said. “It’s one of the best teams I’ve ever had at being able to focus on what they’ve been working on.”
