The Illinois (6-13, 1-7) women’s basketball team will play the second of its three-game home stretch against Nebraska (17-6, 6-6) on Saturday afternoon.

Illinois are on a five-game losing streak dating back to before its brief pause due to COVID-19 issues. The last time the Illini won at home was against the Wisconsin Badgers, 68-47 on Jan. 9.

Wednesday night, the Illini went head-to-head against No. 7 Indiana, losing 93-61. Freshmen Adalia McKenzie and Jayla Oden led the team in scoring with double digits.

The Hoosiers shut down the Illini quickly in the first quarter and dominated the rest of the game.

Like Illinois, Nebraska also lost its last game, falling to Ohio State, 80-70, and the Cornhuskers are on a two-game losing streak. Freshman Alexis Markowski scored a career-high 23 points and added 15 rebounds to get a double-double.

Besides Markowski, the Huskers are led by Jaz Shelley, who averages 11.9 points and 7.3 rebounds per game.

Also in double figure scoring is Sam Haiby with 10.2 points and Isabelle Bourne with 10 points.

Nebraska, although not ranked, has received votes in the Associated Press and USA Today/WBCA Coaches Poll.

“Nebraska is probably one of the deepest teams in the league,” said head coach Nancy Fahey. “They’re very balanced and go inside out. They shoot the ball pretty well.”

With just under a month until the Big Ten tournament, the Illini have got a rough end of their season. The next four games for the Illini are going to be a challenge, especially since COVID-19 delayed a couple weeks of their season.

Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. and can be streamed on Big Ten Plus.
