Tim Anderson is stepping away from Illinois basketball, the program announced on Friday afternoon. The announcement is a big loss for the Illini, as Anderson played an integral recruiting role during his three seasons in Champaign.
“It has been a dream come true to work at the University of Illinois and represent the Fighting Illini,” Anderson told Illinois Athletics. “I’ve decided to take some time away from coaching in order to focus on myself and my family. I want to thank everyone who is reaching out for their support, and hope all will respect the personal nature of this decision.”
Anderson’s basketball success sparked on the AAU circuit, helping younger players train. This experience built his reputation among high school players, which helped him as he moved to the collegiate game. Anderson began at DePaul, recruiting the Chicago area well.
When the Illini had openings in 2021, as Chin Coleman and Orlando Antigua left for Kentucky, Anderson was a lead candidate. In three seasons, he led the recruiting effort for Terrence Shannon Jr., Ty Rodgers, Dra Gibbs-Lawhorn, Morez Johnson Jr., Skyy Clark and others.
“Whether recruiting, building and maintaining personal relationships or player development, TA has been a key part of the success we’ve experienced,” said head coach Brad Underwood.

Illinois may have to fill another assistant role in the 2024 offseason despite Antigua returning earlier this summer. For now, Kwa Jones has been promoted to a temporary assistant role on the staff.
Regardless, with a talented roster and coming off an Elite Eight, the University should be a sought-after coaching job. Jones will get his opportunity this late in the cycle, but Underwood will be on the lookout to fill a permanent role in the future.
