On the final day of 2024, various Illini played in their first bowl game with the program. No. 20 Illinois (10-3) brought forth noteworthy games from multiple players, including some younger athletes deserving more snaps in 2025. It was a collective effort by Illinois to take down No. 15 South Carolina (9-4), and certain guys in particular deserve their flowers.
Brandon Henderson
Sophomore offensive lineman Brandon Henderson is one Illini who should not be overlooked. Standing at 6-foot-5 and 335 pounds, Henderson is tough and exactly what Illinois needs for next season. In the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl, his forceful blocking allowed Illinois’ run game to flourish.
Although his performance in the bowl was off to a rocky start, allowing his quarterback to be pressured, he adapted to the high-intensity SEC playstyle. The team finished with 183 rushing yards, and his physicality late in the game was vital in securing the victory.
Henderson stood his ground against a deep defensive line and gave junior running back Josh McCray a gaping hole to burst through to seal the deal for the Illini. His consistency and lack of errors demonstrate he’s a quick learner and should play many more snaps next season.

Mac Resetich
Though his stat sheet appears slightly underwhelming, sophomore defensive back Mac Resetich earned a spot on this list. This is because of his impressive sack against redshirt freshman quarterback LaNorris Sellers and his overall energy to battle on the field. With his youth, he’s extra eager to get playing time. While he’s not the most elite in the secondary, he certainly continues to showcase his potential.
Resetich brought Sellers down for a loss of 12 yards, which was notable in itself considering how well Sellers moves on his feet. The Illinois native did not have a perfect game but showed flashes of fervor toward the ball.
To start the second half, the Illini attempted an onside kick. While Resetich was there and got his hands on the football, he couldn’t quite secure it for an Illini possession. Regardless, he also has time to learn and adjust to different situations. The more snaps, the better.
Jaheim Clarke
In this game, sophomore defensive back Jaheim Clarke showed he’s willing to sacrifice his body for his fellow Illini. He made diving tackles to push his opponents out of bounds and took hard hits to prevent the Gamecocks from advancing further.
Additionally, Clarke was one of the saving graces after junior quarterback Luke Altmyer’s interception. He threw his body on top of the football after it was punched out for a fumble by senior defensive lineman Ezekiel Holmes. This recovery led to an Illinois touchdown, and Clarke continued to play sharp on defense.
He’s quick on his feet and reads the opponents’ moves well. Clarke is still young and has much to learn, but these promising signs illustrate his worthiness for next season.
