No one can slow down the Illini right now when it comes to recruiting the Class of 2026. Four-star linebacker Cam Thomas announced his commitment Thursday via X and will join the No. 13 composite class in the 247Sports 2026 rankings.
Thomas received offers and visited high-level programs like Michigan, Oregon, Wisconsin, Indiana, Penn State and Kentucky. The sought-after linebacker chose Illinois, a major win for head coach Bret Bielema.
The Ohio native is a speedy linebacker who can play in the middle and outside. His tape shows that he lines up more on the line of scrimmage, but his versatility is intriguing and a large reason why he has an “athlete” designation. Thomas’ hustle also stands out, never giving up on plays.
Illinois has had a lot of talent on the defensive side of the football in the last couple of years, but few have been as talented as Thomas when they arrived. He will be a focal point of the defense and shores up another position in the 2026 class that Illinois is clearly trying to attack following its 10-win season.
