Vontae Davis was found dead today at his Florida home at the age of 35. Davis was a former Illinois football defensive back who later went on to play for the Miami Dolphins, Indianapolis Colts and the Buffalo Bills as a cornerback.
Early reports from the Davie Police Department state that, at this time, it appears that there was no foul play involved. There is no information or details released about how Davis died other than the fact that the house assistant found his body Monday morning.
Davis had an illustrious three years at Illinois, racking up numerous awards, beginning with First Team Freshman All-American. He went on to win back-to-back First Team All-Big Ten awards in 2007 and 2008 while leading Illinois to the Rose Bowl.
The accolades and athleticism that Davis boasted during his time at Illinois, brought comparisons to his NFL brother, Vernon Davis. With nothing left to prove, Davis declared for the draft after his junior year, where he was selected 25th by the Miami Dolphins.
His career lasted almost a decade, spanning three different NFL teams. Davis also made two consecutive Pro Bowls during his career in 2014 and 2015 and was on the PFWA All-Rookie Team in 2009. Davis is well known for spontaneously retiring during halftime of a game in September 2018.
