Illinois football continues to add to its coaching staff. Its newest addition is Matt Ellerbrock, who will be the assistant linebackers coach. Illinois continues its trend of hiring coaches with relationships to the program. Ellerbrock worked with current linebackers coach Archie McDaniel from 2022-23.
With 12 years of coaching experience, Ellerbrock spent eight years as a defensive graduate assistant at four programs, including Houston. He then spent 2021 as a linebackers coach at McNeese State before returning to Houston.
While a defensive analyst with his former program, Ellerbrock helped them move conferences into the Big XII two seasons ago.
“We are excited to add Matt to our coaching staff,” said head coach Bret Bielema in a statement. “Matt comes highly recommended from around the coaching profession. His experiences over 10 years in college football, including working alongside Archie McDaniel for two years, will benefit both our coaches and student-athletes.”
Ellerbrock shared his excitement about joining the Illinois program. He will work alongside McDaniel and several linebackers, like sophomore James Kreutz, junior Kenenna Odeluga and junior Dylan Rosiek.

“I am beyond excited to join the Illini family,” Ellerbrock said. “My family and I are excited to get to Champaign and meet the special people of this community. I look forward to working every day with an incredible group of coaches. I am fired up to work with a very talented linebacker room and continue to help them grow both as players and as men. Huge thanks to Coach Bielema for this amazing opportunity.”
