Illinois is set to lose another quarterback this offseason. Redshirt freshman quarterback Trey Petty plans to enter the transfer portal, according to Pete Thamel on X.
Petty committed to Illinois in 2023 and redshirted his freshman year. With the elevated quarterback play and depth, Petty didn’t see the field in his time and likely wouldn’t have anytime soon.
The former three-star recruit comes from Starkville, Mississippi, and played for the same school as senior quarterback Luke Altmyer. In high school, he accumulated nearly 7,000 passing yards and over 100 total touchdowns.
He was the 2023 Mississippi Class 7A Mr. Football and the 2023 Mississippi Offensive Player of the Year in high school. Petty was heavily recruited but chose Illinois over Indiana and his home-state schools, Mississippi and Mississippi State.
The quarterback has three years of eligibility left.

Linebacker leaves ahead of signing day
Redshirt freshman linebacker Easton Baker intends to enter the transfer portal, according to Brandon Huffman on X. In high school, Baker was a three-star recruit and a top-50 linebacker in his class, according to ESPN.
The linebacker saw the field just once in his time at Illinois. He’s credited with an appearance against Western Illinois but didn’t record any statistics. With multiple linebackers expected to return next year, Baker would likely have a hard time finding a role.
In high school, Baker was a four-year letterwinner. He tallied 245 tackles and three defensive touchdowns. His play earned him two regional defensive MVP awards.
Baker originally chose Illinois over BYU, Oklahoma and Arkansas. The linebacker has three years of eligibility left.
