Illinois freshman Max Herendeen was voted Big Ten Freshman of the Year unanimously this week. Herendeen was a heralded recruit coming into the season, and the excitement around the former No. 23 high school senior in the 2023 AJGA rankings continues with his freshman accolades.
He earned numerous accomplishments, including 10 top-20 finishes in the 2023-24 season. Herendeen is the eighth Illini to receive the Freshman of the Year honor. His work this season led to an average stroke of 71.28, and he was second-ranked on the Illinois team and fourth in the Big Ten among the freshman population nationwide. He also ended up at No. 56 in the NCAA Division I men’s golf rankings.
These accomplishments led Herendeen to be an All-Big Ten First Team selection. Herendeen is playing his best golf in what some might say is the most critical part of the season as the team heads to the postseason.
