No. 4 Ohio State (5-1, 2-0) pulled away late to defeat No. 7 Illinois (2-6-1, 0-3) 316.200-313.900 on Saturday afternoon at Huff Hall. The Buckeyes spoiled the Illini’s Senior Day despite several event wins from the home team.
After the meet, Illinois celebrated four seniors – Sam Phillips, Connor Micklos, Logan Myers and Ryan Vanichtheeranont – honoring their contributions to the program. The group was recognized in a ceremony with senior videos in front of friends and family members.
Just minutes earlier, Phillips provided one of the most exciting moments of the afternoon. In the final rotation of the meet, the senior delivered a strong routine on horizontal bar and scored a 13.950 to win the event. The performance served as a fitting sendoff for Phillips, who finished his final routine in Huff Hall with one of Illinois’ top individual scores of the day.
The Illini showed flashes throughout the meet, keeping the competition close with one of the top teams in the country. Illinois opened the afternoon with a strong floor exercise rotation that energized the crowd early.

Senior Tate Costa highlighted the rotation with a 14.050, sticking his final landing to win the event and give Illinois an early boost. Such a routine helped the Illini fight off the Buckeyes in the opening rotation and set the tone for what would be a tightly contested meet.

Illinois continued to battle through the middle rotations as both teams traded strong routines and occasional mistakes. Later in the meet, junior Brandon Dang delivered a standout performance on pommel horse with a meet-high 14.600 to claim another event title for the Illini.
Ohio State, however, showcased the depth that has helped make it one of the nation’s top programs this season. The Buckeyes consistently posted solid scores across multiple events and gradually built a narrow advantage as the meet progressed.
By the final two rotations, Illinois still had a small opportunity to close the gap, but Ohio State senior Jesse Pakele and sophomore Noah Copeland sealed the win for the Buckeyes with a 13.25 on parallel bars and 13.65 on horizontal bars, respectively.
Illinois finished with four individual event titles – Costa on floor, Dang on pommel horse, junior Garrett Schooley on vault and Phillips on horizontal bar – highlighting the team’s ability to compete with some of the best gymnasts in the country.
The loss dropped Illinois to 2-6-1 overall and 0-3 in Big Ten competition, while Ohio State improved to 5-1 overall and 2-0 in conference meets.
Although the result was not what Illinois hoped for on Senior Day, the meet provided a glimpse of the team’s potential heading into the final stretch of the season. Next week, the Illini will travel to face the No. 3 Nebraska Cornhuskers (4-2, 1-1) for their final regular-season meet before returning to Lincoln, Nebraska, for the Big Ten championships on April 3-4.
