Only three months after being found not guilty on rape charges in Lawrence, Kansas, former Illini basketball star Terrence Shannon Jr. and his mother, Treanette Redding, are looking to sue the Lawrence (Kan.) Police Department, Douglas County District Attorney and a detective for “malicious prosecution.” Shannon and his attorneys, Mark Sutter and Rob Lang, filed a claim to sue and are seeking “millions,” according to attorney Mitch Gilfillan, who covered Shannon’s trial in Kansas earlier this year.
The former Illini was initially charged this past December after being accused of sexual battery at a bar called the Jayhawk Cafe last September. Shannon was in Lawrence to attend the Illinois vs. Kansas football game. Illinois suspended Shannon from the team, but he sued and was reinstated after six games.
A four-day trial in Kansas this summer ended in a jury that found Shannon not guilty, which ended a lengthy legal process and months of hate from opposing fans and people online. A month later, Shannon was selected in the first round of the NBA draft by the Minnesota Timberwolves. This made him the first Illini to be selected in the first round since Meyers Leonard in 2012. While the legal process for Shannon plays out, he will prepare for his NBA debut with Minnesota next month.
