Senior Will Mroz was named Big Ten Player of the Week after going 3-0 in Sunday’s doubleheader against UNC and UIC.
Mroz’s three victories included a ranked singles win over UNC freshman Ian Mayew, who’s ranked No. 87. He followed up with a doubles win at the No. 2 position alongside fellow senior Kenta Miyoshi.
The win on Sunday marked Mroz’s sixth consecutive singles victory. A key player on this team in both singles and doubles, Mroz had only one loss in dual meets this season before the start of his streak, falling to then-No. 7 Mississippi State sophomore Niccolo Baroni.
Mroz’s appearance on the preseason Big Ten Players to Watch List is checking out, and this is the first time in his career that he has earned Big Ten Player of the Week. Mroz is also the first player this season to win the award for Illinois (6-3).
Mroz will continue to defend his winning streak with a home doubleheader on Friday against Illinois State (4-5) and No. 8 Baylor (7-4). After those two matches, Illinois will take on No. 6 TCU (8-3) on Saturday.
