Illinois (4-12, 1-8) heads north this weekend for another challenging quad meet on Sunday in Minnesota. The Illini will face the host No. 13 Minnesota Golden Gophers (9-4, 7-2), the No. 20 Iowa Hawkeyes (12-5, 4-2) and the Northern Illinois Huskies (3-12, 0-6).
Illinois enters the meet looking to build momentum late in the season against a competitive field. Iowa brings the strongest record, while Minnesota will have home gym advantage and Northern Illinois rounds it out with a less-than-ideal record. The Illini have already seen two of their three opponents earlier this year, giving them both familiarity – and motivation – heading into the weekend.
A chance for redemption
The last time Illinois faced Minnesota came just two weeks ago at the Big 4 quad meet on March 1. The Illini finished fourth, while the Golden Gophers took the gold. Despite the team result, the meet showcased a breakout performance from star sophomore all-around Chloe Cho.
Cho captured event titles on uneven bars and balance beam, while delivering a career-high 39.575 in the all-around, one of the strongest individual performances of the season for Illinois. Cho, whose routines have frequently anchored the Illini lineup and energized the team during high-pressure moments, has reinforced her role as a reliable competitor.

That performance came shortly before Illinois surpassed the coveted 196 team score threshold for the first time on March 8th against No. 3 Alabama. Such a milestone signaled the lineup’s growing consistency that they have been working to build all season.
Familiar foe in Iowa
Illinois’ earlier meeting with Iowa on Jan. 10 was a tight battle. The Illini finished second in the quad meet, posting a 194.950 behind the Hawkeyes’ 196.000. Once again, Cho led the charge with a dominant showing that earned her the label of “individual superstar” from Illinois Athletics.
Cho’s performance included a 9.950 on uneven bars, 9.900 on balance beam and a 39.525 all-around title. She swept bars, beam and the all-around, establishing herself as the No. 3 all-around gymnast in the country.
Carrying momentum forward
Following Illinois’ recent meet against Alabama, Cho emphasized the team’s growing chemistry and mindset heading into the final stretch.
“The energy of connectedness, the family and carrying that with us – and then the intentionality of taking motivation from today and letting that fuel us,” Cho said.
That unity could be key as Illinois returns to Minnesota looking to improve on its earlier result. The team hopes to push its score higher and challenge a pair of familiar conference rivals.
With Cho and company performing strong individually, and the Illini looking to trend upward after breaking the 196 barrier, Sunday’s quad meet is essential. The Illini are presented with another opportunity to prove their progress as the postseason is just around the corner.
Fans will be able to watch the meet on Big Ten Plus at 2 p.m CDT.
