Three Illinois (6-1, 0-1) swimmers swam in the CSCAA Open Water Championship in Sarasota, Florida, on Saturday. The team placed 13th out of 18 Division I teams.
Senior Liv Dorshorst, sophomore Taylor Judas and freshman Emma Schumacher qualified for the 5k race. Within their division, Judas placed 39th (1:01:37.6), Dorshorst was 40th (1:01:38.6) and Schumacher finished 77th (1:06:29.3).
Unlike typical competitions, hosted in natatoriums, the championship consisted of an outdoor 5k swim at Nathan Benderson Park, an open water venue.
Only the top five finishers earned invites to the USA Swimming 5k Open Water Championship. Out of nearly 240 swimmers, no Illini received a bid.
Rice senior Ella Dyson took first overall in the 5k with a time of 56:05.7, while Rice took the team title for the third consecutive year.
