This weekend, the No. 1-ranked Illinois women’s track and field team and the No. 9 men’s team headed to Gainesville, Florida, and competed in the Pepsi Florida Relays at James G. Pressly Stadium.
The Illini started off the weekend on a high note as seven athletes recorded Top-10 program marks in their outdoor season openers.
The Pepsi Florida Relays have given fans a preview of what to expect as the Illini prepare for their outdoor home opener next week on Thursday at the Illini Deca-Jam at Demirjian Park.
Record-breaking start
It didn’t take freshman Jane Roosimagi long to make her mark not only on the field, but in the record books as well. During her outdoor debut Friday, Roosimagi threw Illinois’ second furthest javelin (49.98 meters) during her sixth-place finish in the event. The program record was set in 1989 by Lisa Balagtas, with a throw of 51.58 meters.

Also making her outdoor debut, freshman Romi Tamir took the outdoor long jump by storm when she debuted a jump of 6.34 meters.
Following her long jump, Tamir became a silver medalist on the program’s sixth-best jump.
With the addition of these two promising athletes being added to a roster already ranked No. 1, these debut performances show promise ahead of the outdoor season.
Junior Jordan Koskondy placed third in the hammer throw, marking the program’s third-best toss at 66.38 meters. The record-setting didn’t stop there, however, as Koskondy’s teammate, graduate student Oluwatomilayo Akintunde, placed eighth and is now seventh in the program record book following a throw of 59.75 meters.
Illini look to replicate success
The Illini’s momentum did not stop there. Following Friday’s success, Illinois geared up to do it all again Saturday.
Junior Brenden Vanderpool cleared Illinois’ seventh-best pole vault with a 5.30-meter successful attempt, placing fourth overall.
Following her triumphs from Friday, Akintunde looked to replicate that early success. Placing ninth in the shot put, and putting her in the outdoor opener, Akintunde took this relay by storm when she tossed the program’s sixth-best shot at a distance of 15.18 meters.
Both the Illinois men’s and women’s track and field teams showed promising, record-breaking skills this weekend in Florida. With a lot of new talent and returning veteran athletes, both teams continue to push forward and gain momentum heading into the outdoor season.
Up next
The Illini track and field squads gear up for their outdoor home opener, the Illini Deca-Jam, beginning on Thursday and finishing on Saturday. The outdoor home opener will take place at Demirjian Park. The event will kick off with high jump, 100-meter hurdles, shot put and the 200-meter run. If the Illini can replicate their successes from the Pepsi Florida Relays, next weekend should come with another round of impressive performances.
