Illini hockey dominates ISU
The Illinois hockey team cruised to its third straight win Wednesday night, beating Illinois State, 6-0.
Though the problem of starting slow plagued the Illini once again, Redbirds goaltender Steve Somerfield proved to be equally as problematic.
Stifling the Illini attack early on, Somerfield made close to 40 saves in the first two periods, only conceding goals to Illini defenseman Brad Hoelzer and forward Mark Ergun.
Hoelzer opened the scoring six minutes into the game. Ergun followed in the second period, converting on the Illini’s third power-play chance. The Illini power play finished 1-for-6 on the night.

But the dominance of the Illini attack proved to wear down the Redbirds in the third period, particularly Somerfield. Opening up the scoring, forwards Daniel Cohen, Mike McBride and Pat Saliba each had a goal, while Hoelzer tallied his second of the night before Somerfield threw his hands up in disgust and left the ice on his own will.
Illini goalie Mike Burda didn’t face many shots but made a flurry of big saves to start the third period to preserve his second shutout of the season.
