A look at the terms from the GEO’s former contract, as well as new terms set by the University administration in their new tentative contract.
GEO’s FORMER CONTRACT
Former Contract for graduate and teaching assistants
Effective Aug. 16, 2006 through Aug. 15, 2009
- Tuition wavers vary between units and programs.
- Effective Aug. 16, 2006 through Aug. 15, 2007, assistants were paid no less than $12,586 per year if they worked 20 hours per week for 9 months of the calendar year. For the 2007 academic year, assistants were paid either no less than $13,002 or the campus minima, whichever was greater. For the 2008 academic year, assistants were paid either no less than $13,430 or the campus minima, whichever was greater.
- Effective Aug. 16, 2006, the University paid $100 per semester toward the Student Health Insurance fee covered by the University plan. Effective Aug. 16, 2007, the University paid either $130 per semester or 50 percent of the Student Health Insurance Fee, whichever was greater. Effective Aug. 16, 2008, the University paid either $140 per semester or 50 percent of the Student Insurance Fee, whichever was greater.
- Two paid weeks of parental leave after the birth or adoption of a child.
GEO’s TENTATIVE CONTRACT

Effective retroactively in August 2009

- Tuition waivers will not be reduced if assistants hold qualifying assistantships, make progress toward graduation in the program they started and are in good academic standing.
- Increased minimum stipend if assistants work 20 hours per week for nine months of the calendar year. They will receive $13,840 in the first year of the contract, $14,250 in the second year and $14,820 in the third year.
- Increased student health insurance fee subsidy. There will be a 65 percent increase subsidy in year one and 75 percent increases in the second and third years.
- Parental accommodation period after the birth or initial adoption of a child.
