The Illinois men’s basketball team lost in shocking fashion late Friday night, falling to Utah, 60-58, after holding a big lead at the half.
The Illini led 32-16 at the break, but the Utes rallied midway through the half. Mike Tisdale twice hit open jumpers in the final minutes to put the Illini up by one, but it was Utah that got the last laugh.
After several Illini defenders blocked a Utah shot with less than 20 seconds to play in a tie game, Demetri McCamey pushed the ball up the court for the Illini. Head coach Bruce Weber chose not to call a timeout, and McCamey drove to the hoop and put up a shot with about five seconds left.
His shot missed, and Utah grabbed the rebound and threw a long outlet pass to freshman Shawn Glover, who banked in a short runner as time expired for the win. The referees reviewed the shot but upheld the call.
