After a long and stressful week many students enjoy heading to the Activities and Recreation Center (ARC) or the Campus Recreation Center East (CRCE) to work out, run or play a game with friends. Exercise relieves stress, which is very important for hard working, sleep-deprived college students. Often students are very busy during the week and utilize the weekend to get their workout in. Unfortunately, on a Friday or Saturday night this is cut short because both the ARC and CRCE close at 10 p.m. I recognized this as a serious issue and wrote a resolution to encourage Campus Recreation to extend the ARC and CRCE hours to 12 a.m., the same closing time for every other night of the week.
Campus Recreation was happy to meet and discuss the change. Robyn Deterding, Director of Campus Recreation, is someone who genuinely cares about students and made the effort to reach out to me. Campus Recreation staff has contacted other Big 10 schools with later hours including, Iowa, Michigan State, Penn State and Michigan to gather data and discuss strengths and weaknesses of similar initiatives at those institutions. The Illinois Student Senate and Campus Recreation is currently collaborating on a plan to survey students and find the best possible scenario to keep at least one facility open each weekend, as part of a pilot program. It is encouraging that the leaders at Campus Recreation are making an effort to actively seek student feedback and make changes based on what students want. Please visit www.campusrec.illinois.edu or iss.illinois.edu in the coming weeks to fill out the survey and as always let us know if you have any questions, comments, or concerns about any issue on campus.
