With snow days, midterms and Unofficial to worry about in the last month, planning a spring break trip might have fallen to the end of a to-do list. Spring break is now a week and a half away, but there are still ways to avoid spending break at home.
At this point, planning an extensive trip to Puerto Vallarta may be out of reach. Here are some cheap, last-minute trip ideas that require little more than a few friends and a sense of adventure.
Grab your trail mix and hit the road
Road trips are a great last-minute spring break idea because they are inexpensive and require minimal planning. Popular cities within driving distance include Nashville, Memphis, St. Louis and Cincinnati.
Elizabeth Hult, junior in LAS, is planning on taking a road trip to Memphis. Inspired by the song “Walking in Memphis,” Hult will embark on a walking tour of the city with a friend.

“It’s something we’ve joked about since we saw the “Memphis” exit when we were on our way to U of I for the first time,” Hult said.
Hult plans on staying in a hotel. She said it is a good opportunity to get away for the weekend with a friend.
Get your kicks on Route 66
Route 66 starts in Chicago and continues all the way to Los Angeles. If you’re looking for an adventurous trip, hop in the car and find lodging along the way. There are many attractions and famous diners along Route 66, as well as opportunities to stop off at the Grand Canyon or Sunset Boulevard.
Another option is to exit at Texas for the South by Southwest Music Festival.
Ethan Robertson, sophomore in Media, is attending the music festival with friends. He plans on saving money by staying with a friend at the University of Texas for one night, then at a hotel in Austin.
The South by Southwest Music Festival runs from March 15 to 20. Shows during the first weekend of break include Skrillex and Cool Kids.
Plan a ski trip
If you still can’t get enough winter weather, hit the slopes
Take advantage of the end of winter by booking a ski or snowboard trip. There are many websites that offer last-minute deals on lodging and lift tickets at resorts in Colorado. The drive will take close to 16 hours, but the memories will last a lifetime.
Last-minute Panama City Beach is still a possibility
Craving a beach-type getaway? There is still time to plan a beach vacation for cheap. Driving to the beach will reduce the cost, as well as packing food. Close beach destinations are Myrtle Beach in South Carolina and Daytona Beach in Florida.
Caroline Hokl, junior in LAS, plans on driving to Panama City Beach for break. By splitting the cost of gas and a hotel room between multiple people, Hokl estimates spending less than $400, food and activities included. That is less than what an airline ticket would have cost.
Visit another college
If you have friends from home who have a different spring break, visit them at their school. This is a great way to experience other universities without having to pay for lodging.
