    Mickey’s hand grenades

Ramine notes some malt liquors with entertaining caps

The beer of choice for me this week is not technically a beer but one to be noted. Mickey’s is a malt liquor that you can find at most stores in the most common form of a 40 ounce green bottle. However, a smaller, less widely known, form of this beer can be found at about every other liquor store you go to; they are called hand grenades.

They come in six-packs and twenty-four packs and literally look and feel like little, glass hand grenades (hence the name). Now, aside from this delicious and highly alcoholic drink, these smaller bottles come with a twist when you twist… Underneath every cap is a little pictographic riddle. My friends and I have had a tradition going since we first discovered these beerdom cures and it goes like this: If ANYONE comes over with hand grenades, general etiquette is to read the cap yourself and either give up on trying to figure out the riddle or to say you got it and pass it on without hinting at the answer. Once the cap has made its way around the room then the answer can be revealed and the stumped find revelation and the clever revel in their knowledge of rather benign and sometimes trite ‘common’ sayings.

Some examples include, “believe it or not” (where a bee is next to a leaf next to ‘it’ next to an ore next to a knot) or “Oh Mickey, you so fine” (where they used a mickeys bottle and so forth). I think you should be getting the picture (pun intended) but if not then by all means go on out and buy yourself a pack and get to solving some very entertaining riddles. Cheers to good times with your friends or getting drunk, whatever…
