After all of the previous columns about knitting and purling, adding and subtracting, tools, terms, and the such, you are finally ready to learn that next important concept: The Cable.
But because this is a very complicated stitch pattern and takes a bit to get used to I am going to start off by just explaining what the heck a cable is. So, a cable is basically that pattern you see on most knitted sweaters, some hats, even gloves. The design that looks like a twisted rope, you know what I’m talking about. Of course there are different variations of this cable stitch, but it is a lot easier to just start with the basic cable, and work your way to more difficult things.
There are a few things you will need before you start cabling though:
1. A cabling needle. This needle is very different than your average needle; for starters it has a curve in it. There are a few variations; some look similar to pins, others’ just have a funny w thing in the middle. This tool will be used to hold stitches while you are working on the cable.
2. If you end up not finding a cabling needle, a double-pointed needle will work as well. These needles are a bit smaller and as the name states have points on both sides. It’s easier for stitches to fall off of this needle, but at the same time you can easily move stitches up and down them. They come normally in packs of four or five, so if you and a friend are working on the same project you could split a pack, although having all of them would come in handy later on when knitting round things, or more complex patterns. I would go for a set of these double-pointed needles in the same size as the needles you are using for the project itself. Then you won’t have any problem moving stitches.

Now both of these tools you should be able to find at any of the major craft stores in town. But two stores that will definitely have them, plus people you can ask questions to about knitting are the two knitting stores located in the Champaign-Urbana area.
1. Klose Knit – this store is located at 311 Springfield in Urbana. A very kind staff that is more than willing to help out.
2. Needleworks – located at 24 E Green St. Champaign. It’s tucked away near the back of the building but has a variety of great yarns and other tools necessary.
Next week I will teach how to cable, so get the necessary supplies and get ready.
