Katerina Bizios, junior in Media, just launched her own student-run magazine last month and is on her way to New York this summer.
As editor-in-chief of Impulse, Bizios is in charge of working in every aspect of the magazine from advertising sales, to writing, styling and directing photo shoots to dealing with the layout and design. She oversees 22 staff members and makes all final decisions for the magazine.
Matt Walters, junior in FAA, executive graphic designer of Impulse and one of the featured students in the first issue, said Bizios works hard. Living two minutes away from each other since junior high, Walters has seen Bizios grow over the past years.
“Kat has a good head on her shoulders and has a great support system, her family. She doesn’t let her sorority or going out get in the way of her priorities and she knows what she wants,” Walters said.
He said it was nice to team up with Bizios on such a large project.

“As an artist, I like having my own space. While we worked on the magazine, we worked at the same table and it was cool because we were able to work together on this. Even though she’s not an artist, she has the mind of an artist,” Walters said.
Bizios had the idea of starting Impulse after a friend of hers successfully created one at his school. She partnered up with him and brought the publication to the University.
“Seeing how well perceived the magazine was after we released our inaugural issue on campus has motivated me to continue producing magazines that my peers are excited to read,” Bizios said.
She said she is inspired to keep the magazine running successfully and is already working on the next issue for the fall.
Leksi Culafic, junior in LAS, friend of Bizios and publisher for Impulse, said she has an interesting work dynamic with Bizios.
“We balance each other out. It’s very easy working with someone who knows what she wants. She’s great because she has a specific goal in mind and she’s very driven,” Culafic said.
In seven years, Bizios plans on expanding the magazine nationwide with her friends Wade Withington and Zak Stemer. Together they own a media company. Bizios said she would love to become editor of a big publication out in New York.
This summer, Bizios will live in New York City and work as an intern at Cosmopolitan magazine.
