Three child abductions attempts have been reported in Champaign since Tuesday, along with another attempt reported earlier this week.
Champaign police responded Wednesday at 2:39 p.m. to Fourth Street and Beardsley Avenue after a woman reported witnessing from across the street that the driver of a minivan spoke to her daughter from an open door. When the parent yelled out at the driver, he drove away, according to a Champaign police press release.
Officers also responded 5:13 p.m. Tuesday after an unknown male offered an 8-year-old girl candy to get in his van at Doverbrook and Stonebridge drives. The girl left the area and told an adult what happened. The suspect is described as a white male in his early 20s with “slicked back” hair. He wore a red plaid shirt and drove a newer-model red four-door sedan, although the car was initially described as being a “short” van.
At about 3:45 p.m. Monday, an 11-year-old middle school student said he was approached by an unknown male driver who offered him a ride on the 1500 block of West Kirby Avenue. According to the report, the child ran away from the area and told a parent. The family reported the incident Wednesday.
The suspect is described as a black male in his mid-30s with “messy” and newly unbraided hair. The vehicle is described as a cream-colored four-door car.
