Last Monday your teacher assigned you a paper due in two weeks. It wasn’t long before two weeks became two days and two days became two hours. Now you’re scrambling to finish your four-page paper on molecular biology, while the girls on your floor are screaming Britney Spears at the top of their lungs.
Like it or not, studying and doing schoolwork in your room is not always productive. Distractions like Facebook or ESPN are the devil when it comes to focusing.
The following is a list of motivating places to study on campus. Whether it’s at the library or local coffee shop, these places are surely free of screaming Britney fans.
*Undergraduate Library:* Located on the south end of the quad, the Undergrad Library is open 24 hours Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 2 a.m. on weekends.
“You can find nice quiet areas as well as places where you can talk openly with study partners,” said Dan Tracy, graduate assistant. “Plus there are research books, online resources and librarians right there to help.”

The library also offers study group rooms and rentable laptops.
*Espresso Royale:* Though there are several Espresso Royales in Chambana, East Daniel Street’s location is especially popular. Open 7 a.m. to midnight every day, students can also enjoy free WiFi while studying in a traditional, cozy coffee shop environment.
*Illini Union:* With its many nooks and study rooms, there is certainly a spot for everyone at the Union. Students can use the Union to take a quick power nap or grab iced tea from the cafe, while taking advantage of the free WiFi.
“I go to the Union twice every couple of weeks to work on group projects,” said Lauren Anderson, freshman in ACES. “It is a very convenient location for groups of people to meet.”
Hours include 7 a.m. to midnight Sunday through Thursday, and 7 a.m. to 1 a.m. Friday and Saturday.
*Starbucks:* Conveniently located on Green Street, Starbucks is not only a great place to grab your favorite Frappuccino, but also to study for tomorrow’s big exam. Though Starbucks has a livelier environment than the library, its convenient hours (6:30 a.m. to midnight every day) make it a comfortable place to stop by and study.
*Quad:* During early fall months, the Quad is a beautiful place to catch up on some z’s between classes or review for tests. Though the Quad does not have free WiFi, some may see that as an advantage to get work done without temptations to use the Internet.
“I like studying on the Quad instead of other places because when the weather is nice I get to enjoy it and get work done,” said Carly Cody, senior in LAS. “And when I need a break, it’s a great place to people watch!”
