h2. Parts of printing department to remain open as new department
Facilities and Services announced Tuesday afternoon that it will keep areas of the University printing department open and rebrand it as a new unit called document services.
The new department will now have 19 employees – a decrease of 20 workers from when the initial announcement to close the printing department was made in April 2010.
Jack Dempsey, director of Facilities and Services, said retirement and the Voluntary Separation Incentive Program have accounted for some of the downsizing.
In addition, those not eligible for retirement or the incentive program were able to find alternative employment with the University or another company, according to a press release.
While the majority of the services will continue, some will be discontinued, such as support for long-run offset printing and binding.
These services were “costly” and “underutilized,” according to the press release.
The entire printing department is scheduled to close in June 2012.
