The men’s tennis team will finish out the fall season this weekend at the 2011 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, Nov. 3-6 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y. Representing the Illini will be seniors Roy Kalmanovich and Dennis Nevolo, who qualified for the tournament with their quarterfinal berths at the ITA All-American Championships in early October.
No. 71 Kalmanovich has gone 9-2 in singles this fall with an overall collegiate record of 59-27 while Nevolo has gone 7-1 with an overall collegiate record of 91-45.
Kalmanovich previously faced six ranked opponents in six days during the ITA All-American Championships before falling to Oklahoma’s No. 17 Costin Paval. He will begin his tournament facing Stanford’s Ryan Thacher.
No. 7 Nevolo fell in the quarterfinals and tallied his first singles lost of the season to top-ranked freshman Mitchell Frank of Virginia.
Last year, Nevolo was an All-American and First-Team All-Big Ten honoree, finishing the season 29-14. He also made his first trip to the NCAA Round of 16 for the first time in his collegiate career. The Most Outstanding Player at last year’s OFCC Fighting Illini Invitational will be the eighth seed and will begin the tournament facing Washington’s Kyle McMorrow.
