The second annual ‘Go Green on Green St.’ event aims to raise awareness about green business practices and to get University students involved with these changes. It will take place in the Campustown area of Green St. on Friday, April 27 beginning at 9 a.m. and continuing through 3 p.m.
In order to participate, businesses must initiate at least one green action. Green initiatives include faucet aerator installation, which can cut down water use to 0.5 gallons per minute and incandescent exit sign lights being replaced by LED lights. Twenty-five businesses will participate on Friday, including Murphy’s Pub, Fat Sandwich Company and One World Pizza.
The event presents an opportunity to learn “how to reduce your environmental impact as a student,” said Cassie Carroll, executive director of Illinois Green Business Association.
Students can participate with educational activities and punch cards that can be entered for prizes like gift cards when completed. Punch cards can be filled by visiting educational booths, which will be set up near the Alma Mater at the intersection of Green and Wright Streets. Booths from the Illinois Student Senate, CUMTD, Zero Percent and others will be available to inform students on sustainability and environmentally friendly business practices.
‘Go Green on Green St.’ is sponsored by Students in Free Enterprise and Illinois Green Business Association. The event will take place on Green St. between Wright and Fourth Streets.
