The University’s Chicago and Urbana campuses have been honored for their sustainability efforts by the Governor’s Green Government Coordinating Council through the Illinois Campus Sustainability Compact.
Each year, the council evaluates applications from various businesses and educational organizations. This year, the sustainability awards went to businesses while educational organizations were recognized with bronze, silver, or gold awards.
In Urbana, the award was given for efforts in cutting energy and promoting sustainability.
“(The council) evaluates an application that talks about sustainable practices such as sustainable energy, green buildings, and sustainable dining services…they determined we were in fact a gold level recipient,” said Stephanie Lage, assistant to the director of the Office of Sustainability.
The Office of Sustainability was created in 2008 alongside the Sustainability Council. Both groups aim to promote sustainability initiatives on campus.
