The Illinois Student Senate will vote on a resolution at its meeting Wednesday regarding the Illini Media Company, The Daily Illini’s non-profit parent company.
The senate resolution, if passed, would reaffirm a decision reached by the Student Fee Advisory Committee, which reviewed a student referendum that passed in the spring in favor of a $3 student fee to support the company’s operations.
In a recommendation to Chancellor Phyllis Wise, SFAC proposed a reduced $1.85 per student fee, contingent on conditions that include the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs appointing a University staff member to the company’s board of directors, and SFAC appointing two students to vote on the board as well. The Illini Media Company Board of Directors comprises seven members, four of whom are students.
The proposed student senate resolution, which was sponsored by three of its standing committees, calls for the company to disclose quarterly financial reports to the student body as a result of receiving student funding. The resolution also suggests The Daily Illini strip the term “independent student newspaper” from the print and online editions.
