Illinois Student Senate members tabled a resolution that outlined concerns with implementation of a student fee for the Illni Media Company, the Daily Illini’s parent company, at their meeting Wednesday.
Their resolution underwent heavy discussion by the senators. Most of the discussion centered on the need for increased transparency before student fees are allocated to the private, nonprofit.
“It is up to this body, which represents our 44,000 colleagues, to fill in the gaps, to say we will not be giving our money, and we will not be binding our colleagues to give money to a private company unless specific stipulations are involved in that process,” said Jim Maskeri, chairman of the academic affairs committee and senior in LAS.
According to the Nov. 7 resolution, the proposed fee passed with 1,809 “yes” votes and 1,212 “no” votes in a spring 2012 student referendum.
“We’re continuing to work with the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs’ office to complete the process so we can receive fees in fall 2013,” said Lil Levant, Illini Media Company publisher.
