A man fleeing Champaign Police officers died after he fell through a frozen pond Jan. 1.
Kenneth Brown fled from the police, who were responding to complaints that the 20-year-old male was being disorderly earlier during the day at McAllister’s Deli, 421 W. Town Center Blvd. Brown ran onto a frozen pond in front of Menards, 620 W. Town Center Blvd., and fell through the ice.
Officers requested help from the Champaign Fire and the Corn Belt Fire Protection District Dive and Rescue Team. Police officers communicated with Brown and requested rope from Menards to rescue him. According to the press release, Brown was recovered around 5:00 p.m. by Champaign Fire. He was pronounced dead by the Champaign County Coroner’s Office.
