Champaign City Council members will discuss a resolution that designates Saber Drive (between Mattis Avenue and Olympian Drive) as Honorary Tom Harrington Sr. Way at their regular meeting Tuesday.
Tom Harrington, a graduate of the University, was a public defender and involved in various real estate developments around the city. He was also the lead fundraiser for the creation of St. Thomas More High School, which is located on the street that will honor his memory, said council member Karen Foster, council member at-large.
Cathy Rector, a friend of Harrington’s, sent a request to the city for the honorary street name designation shortly after his death on Aug. 8.
“He helped not only the area where the street is going to be named for him, but he’s also helped develop a lot of Champaign,” Foster said.
Honorary street names in Champaign are brown, setting them apart from the regular street signs, which are green.
