A massmail introducing a Community-Campus Day of Service to take place on April 20 was sent Tuesday from Chancellor Phyllis Wise.
According to the massmail, Wise is commencing the day of service as part of National Volunteer Week, which will take place from April 21–27. As part of the day of service, campus units are encouraged to take part or host activities that benefit the local community.
Several campus units including the Office of Public Engagement, the Office of Volunteer Programs, the Activities and Recreation Center and Student Dining and Residential Programs have agreed to sponsor the day of service. Sarah Zehr, assistant dean and director of engineering career services, will be leading the coordination of the event.
Wise said one of the already planned projects will involve packaging 146,000 meals which is 1,000 meals for every year since the University was originally chartered. These meals will be donated to local food banks and given to many families in Urbana-Champaign. The project will require 350–400 volunteers to participate.
The University is also partnering with the United Way and local Rotary Clubs to organize other projects. A casual reception will be held at the Indigo Art Gallery in downtown Champaign after projects are completed on the twentieth.
