It’s official: South end of Memorial Stadium will be fitted with a new video display in time for the 2013-14 football season.
The HD display, which was built by Brookings, S.D.,-based company Daktronics, will measure 36-by-96 feet, compared with the current display that is 22-by-39 feet.
The Illinois athletic department unveiled the plan early September, and the University board of trustees approved the $6.7 million project at its meeting later that month.
Directly below the display, Illinois plans to install a custom scoreboard that will show fans in-game statistics. That same scoreboard, without the video component, will be mounted above the north end zone.
A 50-foot ribbon display below the scoreboard will be also installed to show additional game information, along with two 420-foot LED ribbon displays between seating decks on each side of the field.

“Our video displays and added ribbon boards will now be visible by almost every seat in the stadium and will allow us to provide more statistics, out-of-town scores and event information to everyone in attendance,” Illinois athletic director Mike Thomas said in a statement.
Also, a custom Daktronics audio system will be integrated with the video display and scoreboard.
