The Illinois Senate voted 34-21 to approve Senate Bill 10 legalizing same-sex marriage throughout the state Thursday afternoon.
The measure will now move to the Illinois House of Representatives. If it passes, Illinois will become the 10th state in the nation to formally recognize same-sex marriage.
“Couples across Illinois have even more reason today to celebrate their love for each other, thanks to the hard work of committed advocates and lawmakers,” Gov. Pat Quinn said in a press release. “This historic legislation will strengthen our state by allowing all committed couples to enjoy the same legal protections and benefits of marriage.”
