The Illinois Student Senate will vote on a resolution urging the Campus Student Election Commission to mandate the reporting of all money and staff time spent on referendums.
Student body President Brock Gebhardt said this resolution serves to make the referendum process more transparent in the future.
Vice president-internal Shao Guo said he predicts a lot of debate on the issue because the senate will have to discuss the logistics of external organizations monitoring referenda spending.
The senate may also discuss a resolution sponsored by Guo asking for continued food and mail service in the event of a Service Employees International Union strike, if the resolution is passed by the committee on campus affairs. Above all, it asks for a peaceful resolution to the strike before it actually happens.
“The ISS isn’t taking a hard stance on either side, we just care about the students’ well beings,” Guo said.

Guo is also introducing legislation that allows clerks to serve on other positions in ISS. In the senate’s current bylaws, clerks are restricted from holding other positions because the role of clerk was formerly a paid position, but it is now a volunteer position. Guo said senators feared this would breed corruption in the senate if a paid clerk held other positions.
“This resolution would essentially spread the work of the clerk to different people and make their lives easier and to increase the orderly progression of the meeting,” he said.
