The Service Employees International Union gave the University notice of their intent to strike in 14 days if contract negotiations are not satisfactorily resolved.
The University’s Building Service Workers and Food Service Workers equate to over 800 SEIU Local 73 members. During a meeting at the end of January, 91 percent of the University’s SEIU employees voted in favor of authorizing a strike.
Members of the SEIU are “fed up”, said Ricky Baldwin, chief negotiator for the SEIU in a press release. Contract negotiations began when the previous contract expired in July.
Negotiations for SEIU contracts will continue Tuesday and Wednesday with a federal negotiator.
“Elected bargaining committees have decided on this action as a last resort, because they feel it is necessary,” said Baldwin in the press release. “Hopefully we will be able to reach agreement before the strike happens, but we are prepared to take that step if necessary.”
