Urbana Mayor Laurel Prussing released an emergency order Tuesday regarding “Unofficial St. Patrick’s Day” in effect from March 1 and 2.
The order stems from Prussing’s reasonable belief that the event may constitute a threat to the public health, safety and welfare to members of the public participating in the event.
The order places three restrictions on Urbana bars during the event:
- Licensees may not serve or permit the possession or consumption of alcohol on its premises between 6 a.m. and 11 a.m. on March 1.
- Licensees may not serve pitchers of alcoholic liquor between 11 a.m. on March 1 and 2:30 a.m. on March 2.
- Licensees may not serve alcohol in glass or metal containers between 11 a.m. on March 1 and 2:30 a.m. on March 2.
Last year, the event resulted in the issuance of 310 notices to appear in both Champaign and Urbana for sale of liquor to minors, underage consumption of liquor and other charges. Numerous participants were treated in hospitals for alcohol intoxication and other injuries sustained.
