The Illinois Student Senate will vote on two resolutions focusing on changes to internal workings of the senate at Wednesday’s meeting.
These two resolutions will allow for more than one person to serve as clerk on the senate and remove the member cap on committees.
According to vice president-internal Shao Guo, these internal resolutions directly affect the senate’s outreach to the student body. He said he feels the only resolutions “that anyone remembers” are financial resolutions. While these financial resolutions are important, he said other legislation like “carry-free campus” and the senate’s cosponsored events haven’t been highlighted as such.
“Outreach is affected by how open we are to the public. What determines how open we are?” Guo asked. “Our bylaws, our internal structure — that’s the reason why these internal adjustments are so important.”
Vice president-external Jenny Baldwin said resolutions focused on internal matters, such as these, help to improve the effectiveness of the senate.

“Having one clerk is fine, but if we’re able to have multiple (clerks), it’s just going to make our minutes better and make us a more transparent body in general,” Baldwin said.
Student body president Brock Gebhardt said the resolution about clerks will help the senate improve its record keeping greatly.
The senate will also vote on a $266 graduate town hall resolution that was approved by the committee on financial affairs earlier this week. If passed, the town hall will take place March 4.
“Town hall meetings are a good source of outreach if it’s advertised effectively and … since the graduate voting unit doesn’t have any divisions in it, it’s important that the town hall has a lot of advertisement and a high attendance,” Guo said.
